This Saturday will have UFC 140 were a clash for the UFC Light heavyweight champion where Jon Jones will defend his title against former champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida. Additional the Nogueira's brother will a piece of action against Frank Mir and Tito Ortiz. This will be the 4th fight for Jones in a year gap and if he wins this fight he will be solidifying his status of super star something very impressive considering he only has 24 years old.
Jon "Bones" Jones vs. Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida
Until now Jon Jones has been looking very impressive in his performances leaving traces of invincibility. He dominated "shogun" Rua like no one has done before to win the title and later defended against "Rampage" Jackson in one side bout also where he submitted Jackson. The only loss for Jones in his career is a disqualification for using illegal downward elbows to Matt Hamill. Technically he still undefeated. He can use a very versatile striking where he throws punches and kicks from different angles and also uses the spin elbow very often. His long reach helps him to attack from a long distance and his wrestling helps him to neutralize the opponents if they close the distance. His challenger, Lyoto Machida was at one time considered invincible. Nobody was able to solve Machida's puzzle until "Shogun" showed that Machida could be beaten and he did when he ko Machida in their rematch. Machida also lost to "Rampage" in a close decision Since Jones beat "Rampage" and Machida lost to "Rampage" many can thing that this fight is a piece of cake for Jones. But in MMA this type of math doesn't work because styles make fights and Machida has the tools to dethrone Jones. Machida's ability to counter punch can be a problem for everyone and he is very fast and probably will match Jones quickness. "The Dragon" uses his karate to be very elusive where he punches and disappear from danger and always throw kicks in different and difficult s angles. Machida's abilities will be a strong test to Jones.
Bottom Line: Machida's long reach fight where he throws punches to later backup will be a bad plan for fighting Jones. The champion has a very long reach that will difficult things for Machida. In Machida's favor he has a lot of experience and Jones hasn't be tested yet in bad situations. However that speaks highly of Jones he hasn't seen in bad situations because he had looked too impressive so far. Machida is a tough fight for everyone but Jones seems to be in another league and I expect him to show another spectacular victory to retain his title.
Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
This is a rematch from their match at UFC 92 where Frank Mir won by ko in the second round. In that fight Frank Mir dominated the fight in the standup and never tried to make a grappling match. Frank Mir will probably want to do the same thing in that fight. A lot has happened from that fight and maybe this fight can go different. Frank Mir comes with 2 victories but he didn't look too impressive in those fights. Mir is a great grappler that lately has focus in the standup and since his loss to Brock Lesnar he has tried to gain weight to be able to compete with the top 5 of the division. Nogueira is a legend in this sport but he is not the same fighter that he used to be. He use to have one of the best chins in the sport but years of punishment has seems to change that. His last fight was a win over Brendan Schaub where Nogueira showed that he still has some left in his tank.
Bottom Line: I believe this fight will take a similar path to the previous one. In that fight Nogueira supposedly was sick and he claims to avenge his loss. I believe that Frank Mir is better in the standup and he will neglect any grappling match to keep the fight in the standup and win by ko once again.
Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is Rodrigo Nogueira twin brother. Like his brother he will be looking for respect in this fight against former UFC Light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz. Rogerio has a great boxing but has seems to have problems with wrestlers. His last 2 fight are losses against wrestlers. Like his brother Minotauro he has great grappling skills. Tito Ortiz is a name mane people know since he is one of the pioneers of this sport. He used to be a great force in this division where he use to takedown almost everybody and use the ground and pound. His wrestling doesn't seem to be as effective like before. He won a surprising victory over Ryan Bader but later lost to Rashad Evans. He is the underdog in this fight and he will be looking to show that he deserve to be in the UFC.
Bottom Line: Many people think that this is an easy fight for Rogerio but I don't agree with them. It's true that Tito Hasn't looked very good in his last fight but his last fight was against #2 in the division Rashad Evans. Rogerio hasn't looked very good in his previous fight too. Maybe he will be able to defend Tito's takedown but Tito can land some punches and is a very strong fighter. I expect Tito to wear Rogerios and in the 3rd round win by ground and pound
Brian Ebersole vs. Claude Patrick
Brian Ebersole was suppose to fighting Rory McDonald but due to an injury he will be replaced by Claude Patrick. Ebersole is a veteran with a record of 48 wins with 14 losses. He comes with a 9 winning streak. He is a wrestler with moderate standup. His opponent Claude Patrick is a submission specialist who likes to use striking to setup clinches or takedowns were he uses his submission skills to win fights.
Bottom Line: This is a classic matchup between a wrestler versus a BJJ fighter. Ebersole's wrestling can help him in this fight but I expect Patrick to lure Ebersole to a position where he can submit him. Patrick has been looking good in the octagon and I expect him to perform well again. I expect a submission win by Claude Patrick in the first round.
Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung
Mark Hominick comes from challenging Jose Aldo for the UFC Featherweight title. He lost that fight by unanimous decision. Although he end the fight with a big hematoma he looked very good against the champion. He landed a few shots that made Aldo go for a takedown. Hominick has a great standup and he is very durable. Chan Sung "The Korean Zombie" Jung is a great grappler and is known for his 2 battles against Leonard Garcia.
Bottom Line: This fight will be very close and it will depend if The Korean Zombie can close the distance and try a takedown to work on the ground where his best chance of winning is. Hominick is very hard to takedown especially if the fighter don't have the striking of Aldo. I expect to Hominick win this fight by decision.
